Arthur D. Drayton

Dr. Arthur D. Drayton, a graduate of the University of London, is a professor emeritus of African and African-American Studies. His specialty is Black literature, and has taught courses such as Introduction to African Literature; Introduction to Caribbean Literature; African-American Literature; and the Black Experience in the Americas, among others. He has had teaching experiences at the University of the West Indies, Ibadan, Nairobi, and Hull.

He is the co-editor of Sankofa: Millennial Perspectives on African Literatureand had been editor of Caribbean Journal of African Studies; Journal of Caribbean Studies; and Caribanthology II: On Justice and Human Rights. He has published in Encyclopedia of Postcolonial Literatures; African Studies and the Undergraduate Curriculum; Native Landscapes: An Anthology of Caribbean Short Storiess; Fifty Caribbean Writers; An Introduction to African Literature; Black Orpheus; Journal of Commonwealth Literature; Ibadan; and Contrast II, among others.

Dr. Drayton has received grants from the Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad; Department of Education Title VI Undergraduate National Resource Center; Title VI A Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program; USIA University Linkage; and the Kansas Humanities Council. He is the recipient of the KU Phi Beta Delta Faculty Award for Excellence in International Education and has served as the Chair of the Department, the director of the African Studies Resource Center, the founding President of the Mid-America Alliance for African Studies, the President of the African Literature Association, and the co-convener of the millennial conference of the African Literature Association, among others. Dr. Drayton is a member of the African Literature Association, African Studies Association, and Mid-America Alliance for African Studies.
